Unmanned aircraft represent a cross-disciplinary research field, well-suited for generating synergies with the institute’s other research areas. In particular, photonic devices integrated into drones hold great disruptive potential for certain applications (e.g., observation and photogrammetry systems). Additionally, collaboration between researchers experienced in drones and those knowledgeable in fluid dynamics, optics, simulation, or mathematical modeling creates a unique environment for fostering and developing innovative ideas, promoting an interdisciplinary approach to technological challenges.

Some specific lines of research include:

  • Engineering and operations of unmanned aircraft: Activities related to adapting payloads to unmanned aircraft, as well as developments in flight and control management, providing solutions to specific challenges in fields such as agriculture, forest and marine management, industrial and civil inspection, and more.
  • Optimization, automation, and digitalization of processes: Seeking and adapting solutions related to process automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, augmented reality, automated inspection, multiphysics simulation, etc.
  • Prototypes: Development of technology related to unmanned aircraft at low TRLs (Technology Readiness Levels), which may be of interest to industry or other actors in the R&D&I ecosystem
